"The Humane Society's campaign to bring cats inside"

The Humane Society has a new Safe Cats Campaign which deserves real attention.  Some of the pertinent facts relating to their campaign (excerpts taken from the Chaffee County Times and the Humane Society website at www.hsus.org):

Outdoor (free-roaming) cats have an estimated lifespan of three years, vs. 12-15 years for and indoor-only cat

Less than five percent of cats taken in by shelters return to their original owners

Outdoor cats can be subject to cruelty by unkind individuals

Small animals such as songbirds can fall prey to roaming cats (millions of birds and rodents are killed every year)

Cats are the most common domestic transmitter of rabies in the U.S.

Dangerous toxins such as antifreeze, rodenticides, and lawn products are all  health risks to roaming cats

Free-roaming cats can fall prey to coyotes, dogs, and other predatory animals.

Outdoor cats are at risk of vehicular injury

Please use the Humane Society link at www.hsus.org for more details on this very worthwhile cause.
