QUALITIES: Veterinarian-to-Pet Ratio
Denver has one veterinarian for every 1,200 pets -- more veterinarians per
capita than any other city in the report. In addition, the city also received
the second highest score for emergency and critical care with 53 veterinarian
members of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. Denver’s cats
and dogs have access to 47 American Animal Hospital Association accredited
hospitals with 119 AAHA affiliated veterinary professionals -- more accredited
professionals per 100,000 people than any other city in the report. Only 20
percent of animal hospitals nationwide meet AAHA’s stringent inspection
standards and satisfy requirements for accreditation. The Mile-High City’s air
quality is excellent, without a single day in 1999 exceeding the Environmental
Protection Agency’s ozone level limits. Additionally, Denver boasts the lowest
flea population of any city in the report and the watershed quality rates high,
important as drinking water serves as the primary source of hydration for pets.
The city also stands out in the pack with five animal shelters per capita
approved by the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators. Incidences of
heartworm are low compared to other metropolitan areas. Finally, Denver has the
second highest pet expenditure rate in the study, with residents spending an
estimated $414 annually, per household, on pet-related purchases.
